About

01 — About
Maya Magennis, portrait

For as long as she can remember, Maya has loved to move. Born and raised on Kauai, she spent her formative years running, jumping, and practicing cartwheels with abandon. Her formal training began with ballet, which she studied for over fifteen years. Since then, she's spent much of her time exploring the connection between body and mind.

She became intrigued with yoga as an undergraduate at Duke University, and yoga and meditation became her support system as she entered the fast-paced, high-stress world of investment banking.

These days she teaches at the intersection of yoga, Pilates, barre, and mobility, drawing from each not as separate disciplines, but as complementary ways of understanding the body: how it moves, how it adapts, and what helps it move well. Her classes are precise, intentional, and genuinely challenging. That's on purpose. The physical difficulty is the doorway; self-acceptance is the point.

Teaching has always been her calling, but it took years — and a lot of self-work — to embrace her role as a teacher. She thinks of herself as a movement facilitator, and loves simplifying complex ideas so they're easily digestible by all.

My job as a teacher is to remind you that you already have the answers you are looking for. It's just a matter of paying attention.

She starts every student in the same place: exactly where they actually are, not where they wish they were. From there, her job is mostly reminding people that they're more adaptable, and more resilient, than they give themselves credit for. She takes the work seriously. Herself, less so.

Maya has been teaching since 2007.
